Sleep is increasingly recognized as a fundamental regulator of physiological homeostasis. Beyond its essential role in brain function, insufficient sleep is a major risk factor for obesity, metabolic disorders, cognitive decline, and age-related diseases. However, the molecular and neural mechanisms that link sleep to these diverse physiological processes remain poorly understood.
Our laboratory contributed to the discovery of SIK3 as a central molecular regulator of sleep homeostasis and continues to investigate the signaling mechanisms underlying its function. Using SIK3 as a molecular entry point, we aim to understand not only how sleep need is regulated, but also how sleep influences energy metabolism, brain aging, and neurological disorders. By integrating molecular biology, mouse genetics, neural circuit analysis, and behavioral neuroscience, we seek to uncover the fundamental principles through which sleep maintains physiological homeostasis across the lifespan.
